Barrie in the Ontario Highway 11 Blog

The following is my comment on the post about Barrie, on the site about places along Highway 11 in Ontario.

I think your review of Barrie was good. I’ve been here about 10 years now. I grew up in Port Union, Ontario, before it became Scarborough, and after. Barrie is pretty suburban still. Downtown Barrie still has a lot of bars and drinking night life. The box malls and shopping in general didn’t get into downtown Barrie, just the outskirts. It helps keep traffic from being completely locked up during weekends when there are people out shopping and even more people navigating the cottage highway. There is a new mall going up not far from where I am. It will be right at the highway turn off for Duckworth, where the hospital and Georgian College are. The two lane bridge which ran under the highway is being done over. A big project but it has been needed for a long time. Living in Barrie I especially like being on the lake and actually seeing it. I grew up on Lake Ontario and I have missed having a big lake nearby – it was one of the reasons I picked Barrie. Last note, for anyone traveling to Barrie in the winter, it does get colder here as we are at least a couple of snow belts up from the weather in the GTA.

Nice idea for a blog/ site. If you are along the highway have a look at your town.

Wreckage in Barrie (2007) Gone Now

I had my nephew in the car with me but stopped anyway. He wasn’t a little boy then but I still watched him while I had a look around. He liked seeing the old place too. These days he also explores old places (and takes more chances than I would like, especially exploring at night).

I didn’t find out much about this house. It is gone now. Made way for new townhouses. I remember it when I drive by the same area in town. It had a nice spot on a hill with a winding road.

White Towers Motel

White Towers MotelIt’s interesting how much you can and can not see using Google Street View. This is the White Towers Motel. I can’t say that it was the White Tower’s Motel because it is still standing, so far. There is some kind of plan in action for it. Likely it was sold to new owners as the name has been changed. Now it is the Barrie Motel Hotel (or something like that). There is one of the old white signs still up but the rest have been changed.

One whold section of the motel is all boarded up and will likely be demolished. It wasn’t a fancy place and now it really looks ratty. Too bad to see another of the old motels downslide and likely disappear at some point.

My plan is to get there for some photos of my own. But, I did like the step back in time to see it in 2012 when Google got these photos. One odd thing, the side of the building which is now boarded up is different now. In this view the building has a new surface but when I went by on the bus today it was the old stuff. Likely a board (which was painted fresh) has fallen off. Anyway, will get the photos of the motel as it is now, soon.
